System and rate of play

The European Senior Team Chess Championship is an open tournament which will be played in 9 rounds Swiss System.

Time controls are 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one. Default time at the start of all rounds is 30 minutes.



Entitled to participate are men who have reached the age of 60 years and women who have reached the age of 50 years, by December 31st, 2015.

Teams from every member federation of the European Chess Union can participate. The teams may represent a national federation or any regional structure of a national federation. All players must be member of the same federation.

If women teams participate a special ranking will be organized.

Each team shall consist of four players in fixed order. Additionally one reserve player can be nominated who is only allowed to play on board 4.

A provisional nomination of the players and the reserve player has to be submitted together with the registration of the team. Changes in in the team can be made until the captains meeting takes place. The start ranking list will be determined by the average rating (board 1-4) of every team.


Awards, titles and prizes


1st place 1.200 € + gold medals
2nd place 1.000 € + silver medals
3rd place 600 € + bronze medals
4th place 500 €  
5th place 400 €  

The team with the best improvement to the start ranking list obtains a special prize in the amount of 400 €.

Prizes for women teams:

1st place 500 € + gold medals
2nd place 300 € + silver medals
3rd place 200 € + bronze medals

Material prizes for all participating players.

The winner of the European Senior Team Chess Championship will be awarded the title “European Senior Team Chess Champion 2015”.

The best women team of the European Senior Team Chess Championship will be awarded  the title “European Senior Women Team Chess Champion 2015”.



The ranking depends on the number of match points (win = 2 match points, draw = 1 match point, loss = 0 match points).


  1. match points of each opponent (cut 1) x game points scored against him
  2. game points
  3. sum of game points of all opponents
  4. sum of game points of all opponents defeated plus one half of the game points of all the opponents with which a tied result was achieved

Board prizes are awarded for the best performance rating of players (having at least played 7 games). In case of a tie it will be broken by (a) direct encounter, (b) higher number of games, (c) percentage score and (d) team rank.
