The Russian Women Team challenges the top teams in the ESTCC

Vienna – The Russian Women team is the big surprise of the first four rounds in the European Senior Team Championship 2015 in Vienna. After two wins against the Austrian Women and Vienna they beat in round three Italy, one of the big favorites. Valentina Kozlovskaya and Elena Fatalibekova score wins on board three and four. When Svetlana Mednikova held the draw the surprising 2,5:1,5 win was fixed. In round four the team was close to play 2:2 against Israel, the number three in the starting list, but in the end Nathan Birnboim managed to win a drawish position against Kozlovskaya. The run from the Russian Women was stopped for the moment.

Israel took the sole lead with this win. Russia, Austria and Sankt Petersburg follow with one point behind. In the direct match in round three Austria played four draws against Russia and took a first point from the number one team. In the fourth round the neighbours duell between Germany and Austria started less promising for Austria when Karl Janetschek lost his game after two moves because of his ringing phone. But Austria stroke back with wins from Kurt Petschar and Georg Danner who could turn his game completely. With this third win Austria will fight for the medals.

A very good performance shows the Vienna 75+ team, the oldest one in the tournament. In the second round they suprise with a 2:2 against Sankt Petersburg. After a loss against Hessen 1 they win against Danmark with 2,5:1,5 their second match. In the table after round four Vienna 75+ is on the 10th place leading the teams with five points. (wk)
